Our educational efforts are aimed towards children and youth in Vesteralen islands, tourists and all the stakeholders in the marine environment: fishermen, whale-watching companies, ferries. The natural resources in Vesteralen can be an important part of people's livelihoods, and knowledge and building skills for sustainable tourism career can promote the young people staing in the islands and ensuring the protection of its important ecosystems.
BIOLOGY CURRICULUM
We developed a part of the national curriculum in biology as a series of practical workshops and fieldwork experience for students on two topics: food web in the ocean and photo-ID of whales. One class of Andoy highschool participated in the pilot project in 2013, and we aim to include more classes in the future. |
PUBLIC TALKS AND EVENTS
In 2013 we participated in Whale Half Marathon children's race with our ''whale runner'', to increase the interest of children in the local cetacean species, focvusing on the sperm whale, important in the local marine ecosystem and the basis of local sustainable tourism economy. We organised lecture series in Hisnakul every week in the summer of 2013 on the topics of the marine environment and biodiversity. New topics are planned for 2014. |
